Plastic bottles are a convenient and inexpensive way to package liquids, used by drink, sauce and other food manufacturers around the world. While reusing and recycling is encouraged, particularly with plastic, there have been concerns about reusing the PET bottles that energy drinks and juices are bottled in. It is believed that, over time, the plastic can release chemicals into the liquid it is holding. It is therefore better to buy small plastic bottles made of more rigid plastic, similar to that used in water bottles for exercise, and decant liquids into them.
Recycling the PET bottles is not difficult though, as they do have other uses. The bigger bottles can be converted into bird feeders – there are many methods available online for this. You can use them to make noisy shakers for the next game you attend, half filling them with small stones and decorating them in your team’s colors. Bottles with wider necks can be used to store straws, kebab skewers or pencils and pens.
When you are buying small plastic bottles, consider the purpose they will be used for, and how leakproof you need them to be. Many mothers will lament the many juice bottles they have bought that claimed to be leakproof – and weren’t.
Small plastic bottles can save you money too. Buying in bulk quantities represents an easy way to save on the groceries, but those big, heavy containers can be difficult to work with on a daily basis. For example, buying a 5 litre container of hand dishwashing liquid will save you money – but it’s difficult to pour small quantities out of the large bottle. Instead, buy a small plastic bottle and fill it with the dishwashing liquid for convenient every day use. You can use small plastic bottles to distribute household cleaning liquid to the bathrooms as well as the kitchen.
Small plastic bottles are ideal for travelling, allowing you to take the small amount of shampoo, conditioner or body lotion you actually need, rather than lugging full size containers around. Just be sure to label the bottles – you don’t want to condition your hair with the body lotion!
Plastic bottles have different lids to suit different purposes. A straightforward screw top lid works well with thicker liquids that won’t gush out. A dispensing lid is better for runny liquids as it gives you more control on how much you take at a time.
You can color co-ordinate your small plastic bottles to match décor, luggage or just tickle your fancy. Airtight bottles can be used to store leftover food such as sauces or gravy too. Small plastic bottles are certainly big on usefulness.
